why it's important to replace your air filter

August 24, 2020

Most people don’t think about their HVAC system until they have to – when it inevitably stops functioning they way it should. Air filters are one of the biggest reasons for a system complication or failure. This article will inform you how air filters work and what can happen if they are not replaced on a regular schedule.

How does an air filter work?

Air filters consist of fiberglass or pleated paper and are surrounded by a cardboard frame. They act as a barrier that prevents contaminants and particles such as dust, pollen, mold, lint, animal hair and bacteria, from circulating in the air or reaching sensitive parts of a HVAC system.

How often should an air filter be replaced?

Most manufacturers recommend replacing basic air filters every 30-60 days. However single-occupant homes with no pets can wait 6 months to a year before changing the filter. A regular home with no pets should be replaced every 90 days. A regular home with a single pet should be replaced every 60 days and a home with multiple pets should be replaced every 20-45 days.

What happens if you don’t replace your air filters?

When air filters are not replaced regularly, they can get clogged up by the buildup of particles and contaminates that stick to the filter – this creates a barrier that does not allow air to completely flow through, causing problems for the entire HVAC system. These potential problems include: higher energy bills, poor temperature regulation, health concerns, furnace failures and clamped up coils.

What you can do:

Figure out which filters in your home need replacing and change them out as soon as possible. If you find that one of your filters look impenetrable, like nothing, not even air, could pass through them, then it’s time to contact Air Control to inspect the HVAC system to resolved any issues that may be causing a clogged air filter, preventing further problems in the future.
